More Than 14,000 Call For CCTV In Hastings Park

On Friday (March 19), 14,000 people had signed a petition calling for CCTV in Alexandra Park to keep people safe and deter criminal activity.

A public group on Facebook called "Make Alexandra Park safe" has also attracted more than 1,400 members.

The organiser said the move was prompted by a friend who was physically attacked in the park last year, leaving her with severe PTSD.

Claire Noble, who started the Change.org petition, said police had to drop the investigation because of a lack of evidence but CCTV would have strengthened the case.

Now, Claire is calling for an 'indigo' path going through the park which will be well-lit and fully covered by CCTV surveillance.

She said the name comes from her friendship with the woman who was attacked, as the pair often see the word indigo popping up in their lives.

Claire said:

"It happened so regularly that it has become our thing.

"We call one another indigo sisters for this reason."

On Facebook she said that she was supposed to meet her friend on the day of the attack, but was running late.

The petition is calling for full CCTV surveillance to covar a route that will run the entire length of the park, from entrance to exit. It's also calling for 'suitable lighting' for after dark.

It's also hoped that the idea could be copied by other parks to help keep more people safe.

The calls follow a sexual assault reported on Sunday (March 14).
