The government has announced that the Port of Newhaven has been successful in its bid to the Port Infrastructure Fund and is to receive £6,215,839 in government funding.
Ministers said that new infrastructure at ports such as Newhaven will be needed, whether or not the UK secures a negotiated agreement with the EU.
The announcement came just days before the UK was due to leave the Customs Union and Single Market, with new procedures for border crossings set to come into place.
The fund, the government says, is targeted at those ports that have the space to build new border infrastructure on their current sites so that they are ready to handle new customs requirements under the new Border Operating Model.
The funding can be used for a range of vital port infrastructure - from warehouses and control posts to traffic management systems.
Specifically in relation to Newhaven, the government claimed the funds would help improve infrastructure, and would assist it to secure freight and ferry services for years to come.
Newhaven Port is one of 41 ports that were successful in receiving funding totalling £194,334,631.
Latest government figures show Newhaven handled 778,483 tonnes of cargo throughout 2019, the last year for which statistics are available.
