Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Brighton & Hove City Council have together issued a statement regarding the fire at the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton.

The statement, issued today (July 17) reads:

"We continue to support our partners in responding to the fire at the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton.

"While the fire has now been brought under control, the building has suffered significant damage.

"As a result, the A259 will remain closed for at least the next 72 hours, during which time activity will be ongoing to make the location safe.

"This timeframe may be extended, as partners work hard to reduce the footprint of the site safely.

"We would once again like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while this takes place."

The fire, which started at around 5.30pm on Saturday afternoon, continued to burn throughout Sunday, with police cordoning off the seafront from the Palace Pier to East Street and traffic being diverted away from the area.

High winds at the weekend hampered the efforts of firefighters to bring the fire under control.

No injuries have been reported, however, residents in the area were advised to keep doors and windows shut due to heavy smoke billowing from the building, creating a smog that could be seen in the air hundreds of metres away.
