Police are investigating after a report of a mutilated dog discovered in a garden in Haywards Heath earlier this month.

Officers said they were alerted to the incident in the Bentswood Road area on May 11.

It is also understood that video footage may have circulated online.

PI Darren Taylor said:

"What has been brought to my attention is so shocking and disturbing that even after nearly 20 years in the force it even made me feel ill.

"Sometime, possibly in the last two weeks, a poor dog was attacked in its own back garden and mutilated by persons unknown.

"This awful and vile event took place in the Bentswood Road area of Haywards Heath."

"This footage I gather, has been shared on social media.

"I ask anyone who may have seen this footage, or even have this footage, to come forward."

The property was visited by the RSPCA after concerns were raised.

Insp Taylor added:

"I have seen some shocking things in my career, but I have never seen anything this despicable.

"I truly believe that no matter what walk of life you come from, you would find this disturbing and disgusting."

Anyone who has the video footage or has any information is asked to contact 101, quoting serial 1136 of 26/05.
