New Action In Hastings To Promote More 20MPH Zones

Green councillors and supporters in Hastings

Campaigners for a default 20mph speed limit on residential roads in Hastings have handed a 1,400-signature petition, supporting the proposal, to East Sussex County Council.

The latest petition, which this time was headed by Green councillors in Hastings and St. Leonards, is one of many campaigns that have tried to persuade the top-tier local authority to increase measures that would restrict traffic speeds to improve road safety.

Party members said signatures were collected at several points, including a number of primary schools.

This latest request to impose lower speed limits came after Green councillor Amanda Jobson (Gensing) brought a motion to Hastings Borough Council last October, calling on East Sussex County Council to introduce a default 20mph speed limit in residential areas.

In June, the county council's lead member for transport and environment, Cllr. Claire Dowling (Conservative, Uckfield North), rejected the idea of a blanket limit.

However, official county council records from June show she stated that, although enforcing 20mph on all residential streets wasn't a priority at the time, the authority will continue to target resources, which include 20mph limits and other measures, toward schemes that will best benefit local communities.

The petition's promoters used evidence from government reports showing a significant reduction in road casualties in London's 20mph zones, and added a plea to make more journeys on foot or by bicycle.

Julia Hilton, Green group leader on Hastings Borough Council, said:

"From talking to parents outside many of our local primary schools, as well as other local residents, we found that there is overwhelming support for a default speed limit of 20mph on residential streets.

"In just the past six months in St Leonards there have been two deaths from car crashes as well as three crashes on just one stretch of road.

"It's clear we need a significant culture change around driving in residential areas, with far less tolerance of speeding, and a 20mph speed limit would be a significant step in making our roads safer."
