West Sussex Conservatives have taken to social media to announce Paul Marshall will be named the new leader of the county council. Mr Marshall, who represents Storrington, was elected group leader at a meeting today (October 14) and will take over the leadership at a meeting of the full council on Friday. While the majority, including outgoing leader Louise Goldsmith, offered their congratulations, Labour leader Michael Jones said Mr Marshall had been given a ‘poisoned chalice’. Mrs Goldsmith resigned as leader on October 4, on the same day a report was leaked suggesting the authority should lose control of its children’s services department. The same report described Mr Marshall and John Readman, director of children and family services, as ‘major assets to improvement’. He is believed to have beaten Joy Dennis (Husrtpierpoint & Bolney) and Duncan Crow (Tilgate & Furnace Green) in the leadership vote. (By Karen Dunn - Local Democracy Reporter)
