New Parliamentary Seat Proposed For Sussex

The idea is one of several changes proposed this morning (June 8) as officials try to level up the number of electors represented by each of the country's MPs.

The Boundary Commission for England has come up with the ideas, to comply with regulations stating that nearly all constituencies must have an electorate that is no smaller than 69,724 and no larger than 77,062.

Sussex's existing 16 constituencies could increase to 17, with a large area for a single MP extending from East Grinstead in the North to Plumpton in the south currently having no suggested name.

The BCE said:

"In Sussex, it has been necessary to propose one constituency that crosses the boundary between East Sussex and West Sussex.

"We have proposed that this constituency contain electors from [parts of] three districts (Lewes, Mid Sussex, and Wealden), combining the towns of East Grinstead and Uckfield."

Analysis of the new boundaries shows that other suggested boundary moves include:

  • Littlehampton could join Arundel in a single constituency;
  • The centre of Worthing might be united into a single constituency, instead of being split into West and East.
  • Shoreham's constituency could extend far to the north, in a single parliamentary seat that would also represent much of rural West Sussex extending north beyond Pulborough.

The proposed changes are now the subject of a public consultation.

The commission said it extends between today and August 2nd.

Officials added:

"The more views we hear, the more informed our decisions will be when considering whether to revise our proposals.

"Our consultation portal at https://www.bcereviews.org.uk has more information about our proposals and how to give us your views on them."
