New SEND Facilities To Open In Newhaven And Peacehaven Schools

Plans to open special education facilities at schools in Newhaven and Peacehaven have been approved by a senior county councillor.

On Wednesday (June 20), East Sussex County Council’s lead member for education Bob Standley approved plans to open specialist facilities at both Denton Community Primary School in Newhaven and Meridian Community Primary School in Peacehaven.

The facilities will each provide support for up to eight pupils who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including autism.

The facilities, set to begin operation in September next year, would be the latest of several established by the county council in recent years, as the authority is seeking to increase SEND places in light of a rise in children with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

The decision follows a statutory consultation, which was approved by Cllr Standley back in March.

These statutory consultations came on top of consultations the council had already held with parents and staff from both schools. These previous consultations were largely in support of the proposals.
