A man is being questioned by police in connection with a reported bomb threat to Brighton Station in the early hours of Sunday morning, May 16, leading to armed officers arriving at the terminus.

Officers confirmed by 6.30am that no explosive device had been found.

They attended the city's main railway station after an alert at 3.49am, which said a man was "in possession of an explosive device and making threats" outside the terminus.

Police and staff temporarily closed the station, setting up a cordon, while officers carried out a search they described as "extensive".

At the same time, they detained a 27-year-old man who was taken to custody.

Armed police were involved in a further search of the area.

Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw said:

"This is being treated as an isolated incident and there is not thought to be any threat to public at this time.

"The cordon has now been lifted and train services have resumed from Brighton Railway Station.

"Officers remain at the scene working with British Transport Police to carry out further enquiries.

"We are thankful to the public for their patience and understanding while we carried out our work.”
