Parts of Claremont Hotel to be demolished following major fire

Parts of the Claremont Hotel in Eastbourne, which went up in flames last week, are set to be demolished after part of the building collapsed yesterday (Wednesday, 27). A major fire broke out at the hotel on the town's seafront on Friday (November, 22), before a chimney stack collapsed yesterday afternoon. Eastbourne Borough Council chaired a multi-agency recovery group earlier today (Thursday, 28) and agreed parts of the building would be demolished, with work to begin on Monday (December, 2). A spokesperson for the group said: "Following the handover of the site by the emergency services, a Recovery Coordinating Group met today to agree next steps.  "The full scope of this work will be confirmed in due course following further site investigations.   "The instability of the structure and its historical importance does create greater complexity than most buildings that are seriously damaged by fire. "The number one priority is the safety of the public and accordingly the existing cordon will remain in place at this time.    "Following the fire, samples of the debris were sent for analysis and results received today show some asbestos is present at the site. "This is chrysotile asbestos which is a low risk to public safety.  "The fire service will continue to dampen the area to help prevent the movement of any harmful particles. "A specialist cleaning team will also be on site today to begin a cleaning operation outside of the cordoned area." The multi-agency group includes the council’s conservation experts, Historic England, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and East Sussex Building Control Partnership.   More Radio is continuously dedicated to providing a quality news service on-air and online, reporting local stories that matter across Sussex.
