A train has been evacuated this morning (Monday 7) after hitting a tree in Battle, East Sussex.
At around 10am, Network Rail said the current-collector 'shoe' was smashed by the tree, meaning the train couldn't draw power.
Seventy passengers were directed through a 'side-to-side' evacuation by workers at around 10.30am.
Trains were unable to run in either direction while the evacuation took place.
A 'carriage key' was used to override a safety system that would normally prevent the doors from opening while stationary.
Although, nobody would be able to open the doors while the train is moving as the brake is interlocked with the doors.
🌳 Ever wonder what a side-to-side evacuation looks like? Wonder no longer... Thank you to people on the stranded train at #Battle for their patience as we worked together with @Se_Railway + @BTPSussex to get them safely on their way. https://t.co/qm4xC3uXeG pic.twitter.com/QupgK8O6Bm
