"Pay To Teach Fitness In Our Parks" Says Chichester District

Fitness trainers who want to teach in many of Chichester's parks have been reminded they need a local authority licence — and it costs a minimum of £40 per month.

The District Council said the fee still applies during the coronavirus restrictions, which limit classes to a maximum of five plus the leader, with all participants socially distanced.

Officials have noticed more outdoor exercise classes in parks and open spaces, as gyms and other indoor spaces remain closed during the pandemic.

According to the district council, the licences help ensure public safety by checking that fitness operators hold appropriate qualifications and insurance.

The authority also claimed that regulation by licence provides a means of protecting the parks and the public's access to them.

But instructors were also promised free promotion of their classes by Chichester District Council, if they wish.

These are the parks for which trainers and instructors can apply for licences:

  • Oaklands Park
  • New Park Road
  • Sherborne Road
  • Whyke Oval
  • Priory Park
  • Florence Park, and
  • The Amphitheatre Park (behind the old Cattle Market).
