Permission Sought For Workshop Conversion In Hastings

Developers are seeking permission to convert a former garage in St Leonards into apartments.

In an application to Hastings Borough Council, developer Sytecross Ltd is seeking planning permission to convert a vacant vehicle workshop in South Street – as well as a former night club that sits beneath it – into five self-contained apartments.

Developers say the five apartments would be a mix of two- and one-bedrooms and be for rent, rather than sale.

The building would not include any on-site parking, although the developer says this would be mitigated by its ‘extremely sustainable’ location.

In a planning statement, a spokesman for the developer said: “The premises is situated in an extremely sustainable location in terms of public transport, its closeness to local shops and services in St Leonards town centre and its proximity to local amenities.

“The nearest bus stop, shops and services are less than two minutes’ walk away. Warrior Square Railway Station is five minutes’ walk away.

“Because of the constrained nature of the premises, on-site parking is not a viable option. However, it is considered that this is more than mitigated against by virtue of the sustainable location of the premises.”

The building, which sits at the end of South Street, would be converted into three two-bedroom maisonettes. Two one-bedroom apartments would be created by converting the former nightclub below.

While the former nightclub was previously accessed via Western Road, under the proposals the converted building would be accessible from South Street only.

For further details of the proposals see application reference HS/FA/20/00469  on the Hastings Borough Council planning website.
