Rail services on the Brighton Main Line, and the Uckfield line, through south London were suspended, after a person was struck by a train this morning (Wednesday, September 2).

Southern Rail said at 1030am that emergency workers continue to attend the scene between Purley and East Croydon.

Passengers from much of Sussex, heading into London, currently face long delays, and are being advised to find alternative routes.

The rail operator added that, as a result of the congestion caused by this incident, London Overground services to and from West Croydon may be delayed or revised.

Major disruption was expected until 12:00.

The train operator has this web page, detailing its latest news.

Southern staff said:

"Our thoughts are with the family of the person involved during this difficult time.

"Emergency services are on site and are dealing with the situation.

"If you've been affected by what happened on the network today, there is always someone to talk to.

"You can contact the Samaritans on 116 123 from any phone for a confidential chat."
