Knockhatch Adventure Park in Hailsham has announced its first emu birth in four years, to the surprise of its staff.
The last emu was hatched in 2018 so the team were reportedly very happy with the surprise arrival.
Zoo Manager Ben Anderson explained:
"The father has been roosting for three months on the clutch of eggs. The baby emu was hatched 10 days ago and is already exploring its surroundings unaided. The hatchling will only take six months to fully grow to a height of 2 metres. The emu really is rather cute to watch as it is so small."
Emus are native to Australia and are the second largest bird in the world after the ostrich. Knockhatch has five adult birds in its enclosure.
