PHOTOS: Southwick Village 'Under Siege' By Southern Water As Tankers Remove Sewage

The village of Southwick in East Sussex has been described as being 'under seige' by Southern Water as tankers and pipeline block roads around the green.

The water company say that, due to 'consistent heavy rainfall, the ground in the area has become saturated and the local drains and sewers inundated with surface water run-off'.

This, they say, is putting pressure on the local sewage network with 'high levels of fluctuating underground water affecting sewers in and around the green in Southwick'.

Work has been carried out since February 22 to 'over pump' from a foul sewer to a larger foul sewer to 'mitigate the issues'.

"We are using tankers to remove the excess sewage and take it back to our treatment works.

"Traffic management is in place to slow the flow of vehicles and for health and safety reasons. The waterlogged ground and excessive heavy rainfall have also contributed to this incident.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused to residents and wish to assure customers that we are doing everything we can to mitigate the flooding. We’re sorry for any disruption this has caused."
