'Plastic Free Eastbourne' Offers Guidelines For Coronation Parties

Campaign group Plastic Free Eastbourne is reminding residents that the town has been a Plastic Free Community since December 2019 and is asking them to support the cause.

Ahead of the coronation, the group has released a set of guidelines for anyone holding a party or planning an event, to follow when purchasing decorations and goods:

  • please avoid the use of balloons for decoration. Bunting or paper “honeycomb” balls are preferable
  • please do not use stickers or sticky labels
  • food containers and drinks cups to give out to participants should not be plastic, such as polystyrene. They should be made of cardboard or paper or similar.
  • plastic storage containers are fine but use wax cloths or reusable covers rather than clingfilm
  • find out where the nearest Refill points are for the public to replenish their refillable drinking bottles.
  • please don't allow single-use plastic bottles ~ refillable bottles should be brought. We have a network of Refill Stations, where the public can replenish their bottles.
  • selling or providing water in plastic bottles of water should be avoided.
  • where offered, condiments, like ketchup, mustard and relishes, as well as sugar and salt, should to be made available in dispensers, not in sachets.
  • please consider your carbon footprint when travelling to and from different events ~ choose walking or taking a bus over car travel.
  • Covid-19 compliance with the rules that are current at the time of your event is essential

They added:

"Our town is committed to reducing our carbon footprint. As such it is supporting and participating in the council's efforts by “working towards a carbon neutral town by 2030”.

"We would like every one of you to participate in this way too and approve this campaign.

"Please do your utmost to take all debris home with you. If necessary, please bring a waste container and please avoid using even public bins.

"You will come across many efforts to advance our campaign of being Plastic Free Eastbourne. This involves simply replacing single-use plastics with sustainable alternatives. I hope you will enjoy feeling part of our journey."
