An early morning police operation in Hastings closed Old London Road early this morning, and led to the evacuation of residents from 20 households.
Officers said, from 3am, they were outside a property on the road, following "concerns for a man inside the premises who is threatening to self-harm".
Specially trained police were attending, and were 'engaging' with the man until 5.45am.
Other emergency services were also present.
Police said the addresses had been evacuated as a safety measure.
Liaison was taking place with Hastings Borough Council to put people who'd been displaced at a temporary but safe location.
According to officers, the man with whom they were negotiating exited the property, safe and well, at 5.45am, and the road re-opened half-an-hour later.
Police arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of making threats to destroy or damage his own property, endangering life.
He was still in custody at 8.30 this morning.
