Police dog helps to catch trio who stole large number of gas canisters from Bognor caravan park

A trio of young men have been sentenced after stealing a large number of gas canisters from a caravan park in Bognor, after they were caught with the help of a tracking dog. Police said they were alerted to the incident at The Willows, in Lidsey Road, around 2am on October 1, where it was reported three people were loading the items into a white Ford Transit van. The vehicle then made off towards Bognor and was pursued by officers onto the North Bersted Bypass near Felpham. Police said after a short distance, the van pulled over near a pathway and all three occupants ran into an unlit area away from the path. Officers gave chase and detained after he slipped on a manhole cover, while Goose, a German Shepherd police dog, discovered the other two hiding in bushes and deeper vegetation. PC Anthony Oliver said: "This case should serve as a reminder to people that you can run, but you can't hide. "And when it comes to tracking a suspect, there is no better piece of equipment than a trained police dog's nose." The trio were identified as Billy Love, 20, of Eastbourne Road, Blindley Heath, Surrey; Charles Wakeford, 22, of no fixed address; and Robert Giles, 20, of Lingfield Common Road, Lingfield, Surrey. All three were arrested and charged with the theft of 22 full gas bottles and six empty gas bottles, with a total value of approximately £1,419, all of which were recovered. They have since been sentenced to a 12-month community order each, along with £140 in costs.   More Radio is continuously dedicated to providing a quality news service on-air and online, reporting local stories that matter across Sussex.
