Police investigating 'suspected arson' after fire which spread to vehicles and homes

Police are treating a fire, involving several parked cars and the frontages of nearby houses in Newhaven at the weekend, as suspected arson with intent to endanger life. Officers said five vehicles caught fire in Elphick Road around 3am on Saturday morning (October, 5), before spreading to the frontages of nearby homes in which people were sleeping. Police believe one of the vehicles involved, a Citroen DS4, was deliberately set alight and was burnt out in the incident. Officers are now looking for two moped riders seen in the street when the incident happened. A police spokesperson said: "Consequently this incident is being treated as suspected arson with intent to endanger life. "Fortunately the fire service was quickly on scene and managed to contain the situation, with no one hurt. "But it imperative that we speak to anyone who saw what happened or who may have other information. "In particular I'd urge the moped riders seen nearby to come forward so that we can eliminate them from our enquiries." Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 192 of 05/10. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
