Several motor homes appeared on Hove Lawns on Tuesday (Aug 30) as a group of travellers pitched up on the public space.
Around 20 police arrived to perform welfare checks and inform the group that they would have to move on.
However, many of the vehicles left the site and parked on surrounding streets.
In a statement, Sussex Police said:
"Sussex Police and Brighton & Hove City Council conducted a joint assessment of an unauthorised encampment on Hove Lawns on Wednesday morning (August 31), which included engagement and welfare checks with the group.
"Police powers were used to move the encampment from Hove Lawns, but several of the vehicles have remained in the vicinity on surrounding roads.
"Officers from Sussex Police’s Neighbourhood Policing Team are continuing to engage with both the council and the group, while maintaining a visible presence at the scene."
Around 15 vehicles were parked on the seafront.
Police spoke to the travellers and performed welfare checks.
