A protest involving about 50 people took place in Brighton today (February 20), despite Covid restrictions forbidding such gatherings.

Police said the group dispersed after meeting officers, though investigations have begun to trace the organisers who could face a £10,000 fine.

The protest reportedly supported the 'Black Lives Matter' movement, after the death in Cardiff of Mohamud Mohamed Hassan who'd recently left police custody.

Officers in Brighton said they would continue to take enforcement action where there are 'obvious and wilful' breaches of the law implementing the current lockdown.

The death of Mohamud Mohamed Hassan is at the centre of a South Wales Police investigation which on Monday (February 15) saw a police officer with that force served a misconduct notice by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The notice does not imply guilt in any way, but is to notify an officer that they are being investigated.

According to the IOPC, the officer in question attended the Newport Road, Cardiff address on 8 January and accompanied Mr Hassan to Cardiff Bay custody unit in the rear of a police van.

During this time period, Mr Hassan was heard on body worn camera to complain of having a fit, suffering a migraine, and displayed signs of experiencing pain.

The misconduct notice relates to this information potentially not being passed to custody staff in charge of Mr Hassan’s welfare.

Before Mr Hassan's death, he had been released without charge from police custody at Cardiff Bay.
