Pooh Bridge Survives Fallen Tree - Path Reopened

Pooh Corner - Facebook

Pooh Bridge in Ashdown Forest is once again open after being rendered unusable due to a fallen tree .

As previously reported by More Radio, the popular tourist attraction in Hartfield was damaged after windy conditions resulted in a tree falling into it.

The bridge, located in the forest that inspired A. A. Milne's Winnie The Pooh books, had to be shut while East Sussex County Council and the landowner worked out the best way forward.

The authority's rangers have worked with the Andbell Estate to clear the debris from the bridge and footpath yesterday (Tuesday), and it looks like no structural damage was made.

Temporary fencing has allowed its reopening, but it's not known how long it will be until permanent repairs can be made.

A spokesperson from East Sussex County Council said:

"Pooh Bridge is once again open to the public following damage caused by a fallen tree, thanks to concerted efforts by the county council's Rangers working together with the landowner (Andbell Estate) to clear the debris from the bridge and footpath.

"Fortunately the tree did not fall directly onto the bridge and the damage appears to be confined to some areas of the handrail.  Initial assessments found no structural damage, but our Rangers will continue to monitor the bridge over the next few days.

"To make the bridge safe, temporary fencing has replaced the damaged sections of handrail, which are currently being checked to see if they can be repaired or whether new sections will need to be ordered.

"We are unable to give an idea of timescales for permanent repairs, but we will do work as quickly as we can.  In the meantime, we would ask people to take extra care when crossing the bridge."
