"Pop-Up Cycle Lanes A Disaster," Say Worthing Councillors

Two Councillors have urged Worthing Borough Council to "go back to the drawing board" on pop-up cycle lanes.

A recent report by the council titled '"And then .…" Bouncing back in post pandemic Adur and Worthing,' commits the council to delivering more lanes following government advice and funding after the coronavirus pandemic.

At Tuesday's Council meeting, Cllr Martin McCabe proposed that the issue be referred to the ruling Conservative Executive for consideration.

It follows a recent meeting of the Council's Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Tarring Cllr Bob Smytherman suggested that the issue be considered for scrutiny. His motion gained the support of Labour's councillors but was defeated following opposition from the Conservatives.

Tarring Councillor Martin McCabe said:

"Almost everyone agrees the pop-up cycle lanes are a disaster.

"So these plans must be scrutinised.

"The Council must pause its plans and listen to residents.

"They have to go back to the drawing board.

"To go ahead with more of these pop-up lanes after this fiasco would be irresponsible. It shows this Tory Council is completely out of touch.

"People need to be consulted properly on this - and that means all people, not just special interest cycling groups."

Cllr Bob Smytherman added:

"We must have an end to these pop-up cycle lanes.

"We need permanent cycling infrastructure that truly segregates cyclists and other road users.

"For the council to be planning more of these pop-up lanes is just outrageous."
