An estimated 4,652 properties in Lewes were without power last night, following a fault with an underground cable, says UK Power Networks.

The power company were informed of the black-out at 11.24pm, after which they say they dispatched engineers to the site at 11.33pm.

They reported they'd assigned engineers to the area to locate and fix the issue and continued to give updates to residents:

11.43pm: The current status of the issue is that we've assigned engineers to locate and fix the issue; they are now on their way, it is a priority for us to give you a timeframe for your power to be back on. ...

Update at 00:01 - Our engineers are on their way. We believe the issue is an underground cable fault that initially interrupted power to 4652 properties.

However, we have managed to divert power back to some properties, so currently 307 properties are still affected. Specialist engineers from our control room will continue to divert power remotely, so it's possible for your power to come back on at any point. Sometimes we can't restore everyone this way, so we're also sending staff to check our equipment.

We're currently estimating power will be on by 02:00-03:00, but this may change depending on what our staff find. ...

Update at 07:21 - It's Stuart from the text messaging team and I'm pleased to inform you that we believe our engineers have been able to restore power to all 4652 customers in the Lewes BN7 area, by diverting power around a fault on the underground network after gaining access to equipment this morning.

For this reason, It has taken us longer than we expected to restore your power today. Please accept our sincere apology as we know that it is difficult to be without power for a longer duration. ...

We're really sorry for any disruption this caused.
