Radiographers Strike At Major Sussex NHS Trust

The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton

One of Sussex's largest hospitals is among institutions where radiographers are due to be striking today (25 July) and until 8am on Thursday June 27th.

According to Sussex Health and Care, the integrated care system for Sussex, the local NHS trust affected is University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The trust's hospitals include Brighton's Royal Sussex County Hospital, Worthing Hospital, the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital, St. Richard's Hospital, the Princess Royal Hospital and Southlands Hospital.

Members of The Society of Radiographers, who will take industrial action at 37 trusts across England, are professionally qualified to take x-rays and other medical images.

The society says its action is after the government did not meet requests to discuss "urgent improvements to pay and conditions for the radiography workforce".

Its leaders stated that its members "were working long hours for low pay, and that this was forcing radiographers to leave the profession, resulting in chronic understaffing and long waiting lists".

However, the society adds that staff will still provide "life and limb" emergency cover for patients.

More Radio has approached the trust being affected in Sussex, for information about exactly which services will be altered, and by how much.

Meanwhile, NHS advice is for residents "to choose NHS services appropriately and to take simple steps to help ensure care is available to patients who need it most". This includes using 111 online as the first port of call for health needs.

But health chiefs added that patients needing urgent medical care should come forward as normal, and planned appointments should be attended.
