Residents Evacuated After East Grinstead Overnight Gas Leak

Residents in the Moat Road area of East Grinstead have been evacuated overnight due to a gas leak.

Just before 2am West Sussex Fire and Rescue announced on Twitter that they were in the area of the leak, while police were evacuating residents and gas company SGN were working to fix it.

They updated soon after to say that residents were being moved back into their homes but windows and doors should be kept closed due to a strong smell of gas.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue said:

“We were called to reports of a gas leak at around 10pm last night in the Moat Road area of East Grinstead.

“Joint Fire Control mobilised crews from Turners Hill and East Grinstead to the scene along with an East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service crew from Forest Row. Sussex Police were also in attendance and established a 100m safety cordon.

“Firefighters worked quickly to ensure that around 20 residents were evacuated safely from properties, whilst the local gas authority made good progress to prevent further leaks.”
