Firefighters have brought under control a large blaze that broke out this morning (August 10) in the kitchen of a restaurant on Coastguard Road in Littlehampton.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service reported twelve fire engines, two water carriers and two aerial ladder platforms were at the scene, at the Harvester.

The building has been severely damaged.

According to WSFRS's area manager Gary Ball (see below), nearby entertainment venue the Windmill Centre has been "well protected by all crews in attendance".

Earlier, a spokesperson said:

"At 8.51am we were called to a fire in a restaurant in Coastguard Road, Littlehampton.

"Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a fire in the kitchen, which has since spread to the roof.

"There are no injuries, and everyone has been accounted for.

"All roads surrounding Coastguard Road have been closed."

A large smoke plume was earlier visible from a wide area.

Emergency teams ask all residents to avoid the locality, and keep doors and windows closed.

A spokesman for Harvester said:

"We are grateful and wish to thank the emergency services who are responding to the incident at the Windmill.

"Once we have a clear understanding of the extent of the damage we will provide updates to guests who planned to visit us, but at the moment our priority is to ensure the safety and security of the building.”
