Risk To Historic Bexhill WWII Pillbox

Police investigations were continuing today (18 June) after "unexplained digging" was discovered on a historic wartime site close to Bexhill.

According to specialist heritage Police Community Support Officer Daryl Holter, there have been excavations and anti-social behaviour near a privately owned World War II pillbox.

Historians report that about 28,000 of the fortified defences were built in England in 1940, as part of the country's preparations to repel a possible invasion by German forces (Operation Sea Lion).

The site near Bexhill is one of around 6,500 that survive to this day.

Sussex Police said reports in connection with what's happened near the pillbox are welcome on the 101 phone line quoting reference 0305 12/06 or online.
