Paramedics have confirmed the death at the scene of a 30-year-old man, found lying in a country road west of Horsham late last night (August 13).
The man was discovered shortly before 1130pm in Loxwood Road, at Tismans Common near the West Sussex village of Rushwick.
Police said he died despite the best efforts of medical professionals who attended.
Nearby, officers seized a car and arrested three men on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The suspects, aged 25, 41 and 48, were said to be in custody this morning (August 14) for interview and further enquiries.
Police have admitted that the circumstances of the death are unclear.
Detective Inspector Sue Neilson of the Surrey and Sussex Police Serious Collision Investigations Unit said:
"This investigation is still in its early stages and we are working to establish exactly what happened.
