Brighton-based singer Celeste has received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for 'Hear My Voice'.

The 26-year-old star, from Saltdean, co-wrote the song with composer Daniel Pemberton for 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' film on Netflix.

Celeste tweeted that she "can't quite believe" that the song is Oscar-nominated.

she said the song was written for people who feel like their voices are not being heard, to give hope that one day they will be.

The singer got her first taste of fame back in 2019 when she received the Brits' Rising Star award and was named BBC Music Introducing's Artist of the Year.

She was also tipped for success in January 2020 when she was awarded BBC Music's Sound of 2020, which has previously been given to the likes of Adele, Haim and Ellie Goulding.

The British-Jamaican grew up in Brighton and started singing around 11 years ago when she was inspired by hearing Elton John's Your Song, according to the BBC.

Earlier this month Celeste performed the Oscar-nominated track live from Abbey Road for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of London.

This year's winners will be announced on April 25 at a delayed ceremony that will take place at both the Dolby Theatre, the ceremony's normal home, and Los Angeles' main railway hub, Union Station.
