Sarah Everard Vigil Organised In Brighton

Organisers of the Reclaim These Streets event in Brighton this evening (Saturday 13) say they're in talks with Sussex Police.

A vigil has been arranged in Valley Gardens to remember Sarah Everard and women everywhere who have been the victim of male violence.

Several people are due to talk at the event between 6-6.30pm, which will be live-streamed online.

Those who attend are encouraged to light a candle in the wake of the news that the 33-year-old's body was found in a woodland in Kent on Wednesday (March 10).

The marketing executive had gone missing while walking home from a friend's house in Clapham last Wednesday (March 4).

The incident has sparked mass debate across social media over women's safety and violence against women.

Two groups have advertised events in Brighton this evening, Reclaim The Streets and The Women's Equality Party Brighton. Both invite those who want to show solidarity to Valley Gardens at 6pm.

The Women's Equality Party also asked people to bring pots and pans to bang, along with displaying the petition to fund RISE, a local domestic abuse charity which recently lost its contract with the City Council.

Current coronavirus regulations prohibit anyone from gathering in a group of more than two people. Anyone breaking the law could be issued a fine by police, with organisers of such gatherings potentially facing tens of thousands of pounds in fines and criminal prosecution.

Sussex Police have been contacted for comment.
