School Closure After Staff Self Isolating Due To Coronavirus

A school in Hastings has been forced to partially close following a number of members of staff being forced to self isolate.

Hastings Academy, in Rye Road, made the decision after conferring with Public Health England.

The closure which affects all pupils - other than those of critical workers along with vulnerable pupils - is in force until October 14th.

More Radio listeners report that the first case of coronavirus at the school was identified on September 22, with letters being issued to inform parents.

Subsequent cases were identified, and reports suggest that five pupils have now tested positive at the school.

A statement on the school's website said:

"We want to assure our school community that the decision to partially close was not taken lightly but is necessary based on the number of staff we currently have self-isolating.

"Our students' health and education remain our top priority, so during this partial closure, the academy will continue to provide wellbeing support and remote learning to all our students."

A Hastings Borough Council spokesperson added:

“The council is aware of the partial closure of Hastings Academy and, while the school is being supported by Public Health England and the county council, we stand ready to support where we can.

“The cases at the school serve as a reminder that Covid-19 remains a threat and we continue to encourage residents to take every precaution and follow guidance to ensure they stay safe and well.”
