School places announced across Sussex

Councils across Sussex have begun telling parents where their children will go if they're ready to start school. Along with all local authorities in England, both county councils and Brighton and Hove City Council were expecting to send emails to families confirming which of their first three preferences, or none of them, their children will attend in September. West Sussex County Council said just over nine in ten of all applicants were offered their first choice of primary school, while the rate of admission to one of the three preferred schools is at 98.5 per cent. According to the Department for Education, independent appeal hearings should not take place as the coronavirus lockdown continues. West Sussex County Council said alternative arrangements will be made to hear such appeals. The county councillor responsible for education and skills, Nigel Jupp, said: "I know there will be concern among parents and carers regarding how the coronavirus will affect their child starting school this September. "Though the situation remains uncertain, I want to assure people that we will be working closely with schools to ensure the least amount of disruption possible for all West Sussex pupils."
