The Shoreham Airshow disaster inquest has been delayed from this October until February 2022.

The inquest, examining the deaths of the 11 men on 22 August 2015, during an air display in the Shoreham Airshow, has been postponed due to a High Court hearing taking place this autumn.

West Sussex County Council said today that, at the Pre-Inquest Review Hearing held on Monday 26 April 2021, the Senior Coroner ruled that she would now be making an application to the High Court to formally request permission to access certain "protected material" used in the criminal trial in order to assist her with her investigation.

The Council added:

"It is unfortunate that any High Court hearing will not be taking place until the autumn due to the pressures on the Court service."

According to County Hall, the families have been informed that the inquest will be postponed from its October dates.

The Coroner has provisionally secured a new set of dates, from Monday 7 February 2022 – Friday 18 March 2022.

West Sussex Senior Coroner, Penelope Schofield, said:

"It is with regret that I have had to further postpone the inquest due to take place in October this year.

"However, it is not possible to continue with the inquest until the outcome of my application to the High Court is known."

The 11 men who died in the air crash, when a Hawker Hunter jet crashed onto the A27 during a display at the Shoreham Airshow, were:

Maurice Rex Abrahams, 76 of Brighton;
Dylan Archer, 42 of Brighton;
Anthony David Brightwell, 53 of Hove;
Matthew Grimstone, 23 of Brighton;
Matthew Wesley Jones, 24 of Littlehampton;
James Graham Mallinson, 72 of Newick;
Daniele Gaetano Polito, 23 of Goring-by-Sea;
Mark Alexander Reeves, 53 of Seaford;
Jacob Henry Schilt, 23 of Brighton;
Richard Jonathan Smith, 26 of Hove;
Mark James Trussler, 54 of Worthing.

The pilot of the aircraft, Andrew Hill, was cleared of 11 counts of manslaughter in March 2019.
