Shoreham Airshow Memorial Benches Vandalised — Repair Is Underway

Two benches by the River Adur, dedicated to the 11 men who died in the Shoreham Airshow disaster in 2015, have been vandalised, and thrown into the water.

Police said they're taking the damage seriously, and have begun enquiries.

But members of Adur District Council's maintenance team, together with two members of the public, have managed to rescue the wooden seats from the mud bed.

They are now back on dry ground and will be fitted back into the ground later this week, the council said on Tuesday (December 16).

Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council's Executive Member for Environment, said:

“The memorial and surrounding area to the victims of the Shoreham Airshow disaster is much-loved and respected as a place of tranquility and calmness.

"That's why I was so shocked and appalled to see the wanton damage to the benches which neighbour the site.

“Thanks to the speedy response of the Council's maintenance team, along with the support of two very kind members of the public, the benches are now back in place.

"I've been assured that they will be fixed back to the ground in the coming days, which will hopefully avoid a repeat of this extremely unfortunate incident."
