West Sussex Fire & Rescue have been at the scene of a fire in North Street in Midhurst since the early hours of this morning.

In a statement this morning WSFRS said they were called at 1.08am to reports of a fire at the Angel Inn and had arrived to find a significant fire in the roof of the hotel that had spread to adjoining properties.

Ten fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, water carrier and off-road vehicle were initially working at the scene, however this escalated to 14 engines later in the incident.

Footage of the fire shared on Sky News' website said that the 400-year-old hotel had been housing Ukrainian refugees.

The statement, released just before 7am this morning said:

"Firefighters are working hard to bring the fire under control and are expected to be at the scene for a considerable amount of time.

"Over 30 people have been safely evacuated from the buildings and a relief centre has been set up in Midhurst for those that have been displaced.

"Local residents are advised to keep their doors and windows shut as there is a large smoke plume in the area.

"North Street is expected to be closed for some time, so please take this into account when travelling.

"Assistance is being provided by Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, Hampshire & Isle of White Fire & Rescue Service, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service."

Cllr Eileen Lintill, Leader of Chichester District Council said:

"All occupants were safely evacuated by West Sussex Fire and Rescue, and they are now being cared for within our rest centre. This must have been a terrible ordeal for those affected and our thoughts are with them. Our staff are currently doing everything they can to support them.

“I would like to thank the fire crews for their exceptional work in safely evacuating the residents from the building, and our staff who quickly organised the rest centre for those who are affected.”
