Police arrested three women, two men, and a boy, after being called to a report of a fight in Horsfield Road, Landport, Lewes, just before 8.10pm last night (Wednesday 7 July).

Officers said the incident started with an altercation between four men.

However, they understand it then escalated, with reports being made of ten people fighting, and also damaging vehicles with bricks and baseball bats.

One man needed hospital treatment after suffering a cut to his head — and another man and two women sustained injuries but did not need hospital treatment.

Because it was reported that weapons were being used, firearms officers attended the scene.

However, Sussex Police confirmed this morning that no gun was discharged or found during the operation.

The arrests made were:

  • two men aged 25 and 21,
  • a boy aged 16, and
  • three women aged 51, 21 and 32.

All were detained on suspicion of a collection of offences including affray, assault and criminal damage.

This morning (Thursday, 8 July) they were in custody apart from the 32-year-old woman who was released under investigation.

Inspector Justin Ingham said:

“We responded swiftly after receiving reports of disorder and fighting in the Landport area of Lewes on Wednesday night.

"Officers made a number of arrests and enquiries are continuing today.

“This type of incident will not be tolerated in our local community.

"We are increasing our patrols in the area and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the events last night or has any information which can help our investigation.”

Reports can be made online or by calling 101 quoting serial 1299 of 07/07.
