A report about smoke coming from a train near Fishbourne Railway Station has led to one of Sussex's main lines being closed today (August 3rd).
The alert at 9.17am meant power was cut on the tracks between Barnham in West Sussex, and Havant in Hampshire.
At lunchtime today, Southern Rail and firefighters were working to clear the faulty train, and restore services.
A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said:
“We were called at 9.17am this morning to reports of smoke coming from a train on the West Coastway line near Fishbourne Railway Station.
“Fortunately this was a false alarm, and there was no fire.
“However, the alarm being triggered has impacted the electricity supply to the line, meaning both lines are blocked.
“Salthill Road in Fishbourne has been closed in both directions to allow emergency service staff to work safely."
“Southern Rail has advised that both railway lines remain blocked for the time being and are urging passengers to find alternative routes to complete their journey.”
Southern added the services below were disrupted:
- Brighton - Southampton
- Littlehampton - Portsmouth
- Brighton - Portsmouth
- London Victoria – Southampton
