Snowfall Affects Services In Sussex

Train services, school closures, event cancellations; how last night's snowfall is affecting Sussex this morning (Dec 12).

Last night's (Dec 11) snowfall has meant major disruption to the road and rail network this morning with Gatwick Express, Southern Rail and Thameslink networks reporting cancelled, delayed or revised services.

This is expected until 12:00. 

They're also reporting no service between Littlehampton and Worthing this morning (as of 7am).

Sussex Travel Watch has reported Brighton and Hove buses coastal routes between seaford and Eastbourne diverted via the A26 and A27 both ways 12,12A.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning until late morning today, saying travel conditions will be difficult throughout Sussex today and into tomorrow, due to lying snow and icy patches

What to expect:

  • Icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

Despite their best efforts, staff at Plumpton have had to cancel the racing today due to frozen ground.

LAST NIGHT:

  • Hastings police reported a number of drivers stranded on the A21 and surrounding roads in the Hastings and Rother districts late last night.
  • Six cars were reportedly involved in a collision on Saddlescombe Road at Devil's Dyke at around 3pm on Sunday. One person had to be rescued from their vehicle.

Sussex Police issued a weather warning yesterday:

There has been significant snowfall in some areas of Sussex this afternoon and evening and the roads are expected to be icy and could be treacherous in places on Monday morning.

With some school and road closures, only travel if you need to and if you do need to head out, please be prepared.

Check tyres, defrost windscreens fully before setting off, adapt your speed for the conditions, wear warming clothing and take blankets in your vehicle, charge your mobile phone, check your route
