Street Market To Return To Hailsham Tomorrow (Saturday)

More than three months after closing because of the coronavirus crisis, Hailsham Town Council has announced that the towns Street Market is set to return to Vicarage Field tomorrow (Saturday).

The COVID-19 outbreak meant that visits to the street market, which operates from 8.30am-1.30pm on every Saturday in Vicarage Field, had to be cancelled due to the introduction of strict social distancing measures.

But as the country takes further steps on the route-map out of lockdown, markets up and down the country have already opened or are making plans to reopen so they can once again showcase local food, craftwork, gifts and other items.

Deputy Town Clerk & Business Enterprise Manager Mickey Caira said:

"I'm delighted that the street market is reopening this weekend,"

"Safety will still be of crucial importance so all market stalls will be COVID-secure and signs will be put in place on-site, reminding people to continue social distancing and to follow the guidance.

"Advice on how to shop safely at the market will be available but I urge residents and visitors to also do their part to keep each other safe.

"Certainly for the first few markets, there will be a limited number of stalls, but this is expected to increase in the coming weeks as more and more traders reopen for business.

"Undeniably, economic recovery and growth will be a significant challenge for all businesses but they will be backed by us every step of the way."

Street market organiser, Hailsham Town Council, has worked hard in recent weeks to bring back the market and have taken steps to ensure that it is safe for shoppers and traders, and operate within the guidelines suggested by government agencies.

The street market will have a new layout, with social distancing barriers in place where required and queuing systems in place at each stall.

Traders will also be sanitising their stalls and tables.

Mickey added:

"By supporting local producers, growers, suppliers and offering them the opportunity to sell locally - markets are an ideal way of showcasing the diverse range of products available in Hailsham and I'd encourage people to come down to Vicarage Field and support independent trade.

"We welcome back all returning traders and would like to hear from anyone interested in becoming a market stall trader at Hailsham Street Market."
