The group behind many of Sussex's largest anti-coronavirus vaccination centres has confirmed that surplus vaccine doses are not disposed as waste, at the end of working days.
Instead, they are given to eligible patients who may not have prior bookings.
More Radio approached the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, as the organisation behind the mass vaccination clinic at The Brighton Centre, and several others throughout the county.
It followed concerns, expressed by some posters to social media, that unfounded stories of vaccine waste were circulating — due to doses being removed from storage, but patients failing to arrive.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the health trust said today (February 8):
"This is the position across Sussex, regarding 'surplus' vaccine doses.
"In the majority of cases, vaccine that is not used on one day can be used the next.
"But, where there is vaccine at the end of the day that must be used so it does not go to waste, services have reserve lists that they can call upon.
"In most cases, these are eligible vaccination centre and other nearby NHS staff, as they are easiest to reach at short notice."
