Police and explosives experts have removed a suspected mortar from a road close to Gatwick Airport's runway after its discovery in the early hours, today (February 25).
It's been reported that the device, described by one emergency service worker as possibly "Second World War ordnance" was found during a police dog unit patrol on Charlwood Road, Crawley, shortly after 3.30am.
Officers said they placed a 100-metre cordon around the device as a safety precaution.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts attended the scene soon after.
During an X-ray of the device, carried out by EOD staff, it was decided that the object was not a live explosive.
According to officers, it was then removed, and the cordon lifted.
