Sussex Police Surpass Target For New Recruits

Sussex Police has surpassed its target as part of a national campaign to recruit more police officers.

The force was required to bolster its ranks from 2,737 officers to 3,166 as part of Uplift – the drive to recruit an additional 20,000 police officers across the country.

As of March 2023, there were 3,194 officers working for Sussex Police – 28 over the target – and in total, the force has an additional 457 officers compared with the baseline figure in April 2019.

During Uplift, Sussex Police welcomed 38 intakes of new recruits, culminating in successive attestation ceremonies earlier this year where record numbers of new officers were sworn in.

Director of People Services for Sussex Police Adrian Rutherford said:

“This has been a monumental effort to surpass the Uplift target. Our recruitment team have been inundated with people wanting to become an officer with Sussex Police.

“For multiple reasons policing still remains an aspirational career and as a force, we are continuing to diversify and attract applications from people who will bring fresh perspectives and allow us to fully represent the communities we serve.

“Even though we have achieved our target, our recruitment team are continuing to accept applications from people wishing to join as a police officer or detective constable. There are a variety of routes into policing, find the one which is right for you on our dedicated recruitment webpage.
