Sussex Students Create Gingerbread House Kit to Raise Funds for Domestic Abuse Charity

Students from a secondary school in Sussex have designed a modern gingerbread house kit to raise funds for a local domestic abuse charity.

Safe in Sussex is using a design created by Year 10 students from St Oscar Romeros in Worthing for this year's fundraising Gingerbread House pack.

The pack will be on offer to businesses and the public.

The school's Year 10 students had a competition to design a gingerbread house, with the winning house to be used by Safe in Sussex at their annual event.

The modern house design will be available exclusively through Safe in Sussex and will raise much needed to funds to support the charity’s work, helping those affected by domestic abuse.

Now in it’s fourth year, the gingerbread house event is a fantastic way to get involved in the charity while unleashing creativity at the same time.

House packs (build and decorate your own) are available to buy from November with a variety of ways to get involved this year from sponsorship, competitions, an event to visit or just buying a pack to enjoying making with your friends, family or as a team bonding activity with your business.

The judging of the public competitions will be held at Safe in Sussex's Gingerbread House event on Saturday 11th December, from 11.30am until 1.30pm at St Oscar Romeros Catholic Secondary School, Worthing — where members of the public and those participating will be able to view lots of wonderful houses. People without Gingerbread Houses will be able to visit from 12-1.

Fay Millar from 'Gingerbread World' which makes the packs said:

“I am so excited to be doing gingerbread kits for Safe in Sussex again this year and think the design created by the students at St Romeros is absolutely fabulous. It’s nice to see a more modern take on the traditional gingerbread house and I can’t wait to see all the different designs people come up with.

"I hope more and more people get involved, get creative and have fun helping to support the charity and its very important work.”

Phil Dean, Extended Learning Leader for St Oscar Romero said:

“We are so pleased that Safe in Sussex is using our Year 10’s design for the House packs this year. I think it is so important that young people have the opportunity to support local charities and causes. It is also really important that they can develop their employability and lifelong skills.”

Debbie West one of the Corporate & Community Fundraisers for Safe in Sussex said:

“Safe in Sussex provides a range of services to support those in our community experiencing domestic abuse and we have seen a huge increase in use of our services and so it’s more important than ever we raise funds to support our work.

"The annual gingerbread fun event is a fantastic way to get involved and get creative. We are delighted to have had the input from St Romeros students and have been so impressed with the designs they have come up with.”
