Sussex Supermarkets Now Recycling Plastic Bags And Food Wrapping

Most Supermarkets in Sussex are now recycling plastic bags as well as many different types of food wrapping, including crisp packets and salad bags.

According to website recyclenow.com, out of 311,000 tonnes of plastic wrapping on supermarket shelves, only 6% of it is recyclable.

Now UK supermarkets have joined forces to make sure everything that can't be recycled at home can now be brought back to the supermarket and recycled there instead.

Watch the video for a quick illustration by JJ Chalmers of what can be taken back:

He said:

“I’m thrilled to be supporting Recycle Now to help get the word out on recycling plastic bags and wrapping. It's a passion of mine to keep stuff like plastics in use and out of the environment - that's why I do a lot of work on upcycling. So I think it's fantastic that we can now gather up our plastic bags, wrapping, and films, and bring them back to the store each time we shop. It's a simple habit that will make a huge difference to our impact on the natural environment.”

To find out if your local supermarket is involved, got to https://www.recyclenow.com/repeatthecycle and click on the Recycling Locator Tool.

It lists all the supermarkets in Sussex that are taking part and lists what you can recycle there.

For example, when you put Worthing into the locator, it comes up with a list of supermarkets, including Tesco, Co-Op, Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

If you click on the supermarket nearest to you, it ives a list of all plastics that can be recycled at the store.

For example, Sainsbury's at Lyons Farm recycles the following:

  • Baby, pet food, detergent and cleaning pouches
  • Biscuits and chocolate wrapping
  • Bread bags
  • Bubble wrap and cling film
  • Cereal liners
  • Cheese, fish and meat wrapping
  • Crisp and sweet bags
  • Delivery bags
  • Frozen food bags
  • Multi-pack wrapping
  • Plastic carrier bags
  • Plastic film lids
  • Salad, pasta, and rice bags
  • Toilet roll wrapping

Tips For Recycling:

  • Check out our Recycling Locator on recyclenow.com to find your nearest supermarket recycling point.

  • Ensure bags and wrapping are food-free and as clean as possible – this will mean it’s in the best possible condition for recycling.

  • Keep your used, clean plastic bags and wrapping all together and take in bulk on your next supermarket trip. Whether it’s stashed in a cupboard under the sink or bundled together in a bag by your front door – find a storage system that works for you.

  • Add a reminder on your shopping list to take it back with you to the shop.
