Sussex Volunteers Hoping To Improve Welfare Of Detainees

Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne says she is aiming to improve the welfare of those held in police custody.

The Independent Custody Visitor (ICV) scheme, led by her office, has been successful in implementing an updated night-time lighting standard across all new custody centres and refurbishments as of 2023.

In Sussex, there are currently up to 40 ICV volunteers who visit police stations unannounced to check on the treatment & welfare of people held in police custody.

ICV recommendations can require the police to make improvements for the welfare of detainees.

Working as part of a local panel, they play a valuable role in maintaining public confidence in this important area of policing by making sure that detainees are treated well.

Following a board review and consultation with all forces, it was agreed that the night-time light level could be reduced whilst still ensuring safety and security of detainees and custody officers and staff.

Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said:

“This is a great example of the important work carried out by the ICV team in Sussex.

"We should all be mindful that the rights of anyone held in custody are at the centre of an effective and fair detention process, whether it is subsequently proven that they have committed offences or not."

Claire Taylor, ICV Manager said:

“I could not be more proud of our ICV volunteers for the tenacity, consistency and accuracy in reporting the issues.

"I feel extremely privileged to work with such a committed and dedicated team of people who are relentlessly passionate about making a difference in their community.”
