Taxi Marshals Set To Return To Worthing Over Christmas

Taxi marshals are to return to Worthing over Christmas to ensure everyone gets home safely after nights out celebrating in the town centre.

The marshals, which have been funded by the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner’s Safer Streets Fund, will be based at the town’s main taxi rank in Chapel Road.

He will be on hand to help visitors and calm any late-night confrontation between revellers.

Worthing Borough Council and Worthing Town Centre Initiative both made strong representations to Sussex’s PCC, Katy Bourne, for funding towards taxi marshals.

It's after it was announced in the summer that her office had been given Home Office funding to back innovative safety projects in the county.

Worthing’s marshals will be clearly identifiable to the public and will be visible in the town centre on key dates over the festive period, including December 23, 24, 30 and 31.

It’s part of our work to ensure that women and other vulnerable members of our community can both get home safely and feel safe when they are out at night.

Cllr Rosey Whorlow, Worthing’s Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said:

“It’s great that we’ve managed to secure some taxi marshals over Christmas to ensure everyone can get home with an added layer of safety.

“We want to ensure that when people visit Worthing’s town centre they feel safe.

"We hope the reintroduction of this scheme will provide increased confidence to not only taxi users but to taxi drivers too.”
