Thirty volunteers to abseil down Brighton i360 for charity

A man from Hove is among thirty participants who will be abseiling down the Brighton i360 for charity. 46-year-old Mark Campbell is a volunteer for the Brighton and Hove branch of Samaritans, a charity which he said is very close to his heart: "I lost my partner to suicide five years ago and after a couple of years of dealing with that myself, I wanted to give something back and try and reduce the number of suicides in the UK, which unfortunately is steadily rising - particularly amongst men." Mark will be stepping off the i360 this evening (Saturday, 21), dropping 453 feet with the aim to raise £15,000 collectively with the other volunteers. It is the biggest event in the local charity's fundraising calendar, as the branch needs £75,000 per year to keep its services running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Mark said: "Hopefully if the weather stays like this there will be a beautiful sun set on the way down and a glass of something waiting for them when they get to the bottom. "Unfortunately from our point of view there are 14 people from where I work, or friends of where I work, who can't even go up step ladders." The event starts at 6pm and organisers said there will be a carnival atmosphere at the base to welcome them down.
