Three Late Night Shouts In One Day For Newhaven RNLI

Three requests for assistance within four hours led to a busy evening for Newhaven's volunteer RNLI Lifeboat crew on Monday evening - each of them for a separate search request for a vulnerable individual.

The first tasking, received at 9.42pm, was following reports of a person cut off by the tide between Splash Point and the steps at Hope Gap.

Newhaven's Severn Class all-weather lifeboat, David and Elizabeth Acland, was launched and conducted several legs of shoreline search, but found no casualties.

The Lifeboat was then tasked at 10.45pm to a new search between West Beach and Old Nore, trying to locate a vulnerable adult whom was known to be missing and emotionally distressed.

Newhaven RNLI’s search effort was supported on land by Sussex Police and HM Coastguard from Newhaven, Shoreham, Eastbourne and Birling Gap.

The casualty was successfully located in the vicinity of NCI Newhaven lookout.

The third and final shout for the night came in for Newhaven Lifeboat and her volunteer crew at 12.10am when it was tasked to search the River Ouse, seeking a reported vulnerable and emotionally distressed adult.

Newhaven Port Authority assisted in the search along the towpath, using cameras to help identify the missing person to their description.

The casualty was located ashore by the Lifeboat and the crew remained on scene until HM Coastguard and Sussex Police arrived to take over the care of the casualty.

Coxswain, Lewis Arnold, said:

"It’s been everything you might expect for a full moon. We are happy to have located the casualties and hope they will find the positive support they require.

"We’re living in a challenging time. Keeping an eye out for others can save a life."

If you spot anyone in difficulty in water or on the coast, please call 999 immediately and ask for the coastguard.
